Dr. Christian Fässler

successfully defended his doctoral studies in April 2023. His doctoral research focused on the application of virtual simulations in medical education to enhance knowledge and skills acquisition and its transfer in the field of differential diagnosis. This is because medical students struggle on counseling patients in the clinical practice of medicine, and beginning clinical students find it difficult to diagnose patients. The CoVid-19 pandemic has only accelerated the need for such research. Inter alia, Christian found that virtual simulations might be a plausible alternative to standard teaching methods. However, the effectiveness of such simulations might heavily depend on the simulations’ configuration and the learners’ characteristics.

Christian started his full-time doctoral studies at the D-GESS in 2020 after having worked for two years as a research assistant in the project team of the BSc Medicine and the Professorship for Learning Sciences and Higher Education at ETH. He has a health-related background and finished his bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences and Technology (HST) at ETH Zürich. Consequently, he graduated from his master’s studies in Biomedical Engineering (BME) with a major in Biomechanics at ETH as well.

Christian now works for an international Med Tech company in the German speaking area of Switzerland.
